The Newest Diagnostic Equipment

029Because of the expense involved with clinical diagnostic equipment, many dentists must refer these tests to outside medical facilities.  However, performing these tests is routine with Dr. Nabors and his staff.

030Firstly, we are able to perform extensive imaging technology with the Electromyogram….  There are several advantages of this type of ‘x-ray’ over the conventional radiographs.  In traditional x-rays, the source and the film are both stationary, resulting in an overlaying of the structures into a two-dimensional picture.  Obviously, the result can obscure and even ‘hide’ certain problems.

031The term tomography is used to describe sectional radiographic techniques.  When the radiographic tube is moved during exposure, the image represents a selected ‘layer’ or ‘slice’ of the mouth.  We will use tomography to evaluate the temperomandibular joint along with other types of x-rays to appraise the anatomy of the cranial bones.  What an invaluable diagnostic tool!

Secondly, Dr. Nabors’ also offers the advanced technology called Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA).  We needed a way to objectively assess our patient’s joint health and document both the pre-treatment condition and the response after treatment.  This evaluation replaces the older palpation method and is critical for proper and prudent treatment.

ndeWe will be measuring the friction caused by the surfaces of joints that are both smooth and well lubricated or the ‘sounds’  emitted by degenerations, perforation or mechanical displacements.  Different disorders produce different vibration patterns and helps distinguish a primary TMJ dysfunction from other painful conditions.

We will measure and distinguish one sound (vibration) from another by their differing amplitudes (loudness) duration (long vs short sounds) and pitch, harmonics, etc. (sound qualities) providing a comprehensive analysis for accurate treatment planning.
